To Catch A Cook, is the latest Angie Amalfi Mystery and is a very good read. Angie is the pampered, youngest, daughter of San Francisco shoe king, Sal Amalfi. She is privileged in every way, given every opportunity to make a happy life for herself but has yet to find a career truly perfect for her. What she has is a passion and knowledge for cooking which she uses in a variety of ways (the recipes included make it a "culinary mystery").
Although she knows not what she wants to do with her life, she certainly knows whom she wants in her life - homicide detective Pavvo Smith. As fate would have it (and despite his better judgement,) Pavvo and Angie fall for each other (Something’s Cooking) and struggle to figure out what future, if any, they have together. Angie knows she loves Pavvo and dreams of wedding bells. Pavvo on the other hand wonders when she’ll tire of the cop life (or perhaps no life would be more appropriate) and toss his sorry self aside. Pavvo has trust issues that Angie is determined to address.
This book looks at Pavvo’s sketchily drawn past. We know his mother left him and his sister one day with a next-door neighbour when he was four never to return and he never even knew his father but the reasons for this have only been assumed. He came to be a number one homicide cop through sheer determination and despite his genetics... or so we thought. In To Catch A Cook the readers find out the truth hidden in Pavvos’ background and is a most satisfying discovery!
When I finished this book, so perfect did I think it written, I wrote an email to Joanne Pence and let her know how much I loved it (she responded with a lovely note!) To Catch a Cook does stand alone but I would recommend reading at least A Cook in Time and preferably Something’s Cooking (number one in the series) then go on to reading the last two in the series. Either way this is a must read series - I love the chemistry between Pavvo and Angie - I hope you will, too!
